Saint Emilion and its vineyards

Saint Emilion is a very famous name all over the world, for its great wines.

Located 40 minutes from Bouliac, this medieval city is steeped in history. It is renowned throughout the world for its vineyards, its architecture. Legend has it that in the middle of the 8th century a Breton monk, named Emilion, sought refuge in a place of retirement called Ascumbas (former name of the city of Saint-Emilion).

From the 9th to the 19th century, men dug stone to create the city, with its unique architecture. Under the city, there are more than 200 km of underground galleries which provided the limestone necessary for the construction of several buildings in the region, and Bordeaux. In 1999, and for the first time in the world, a wine-growing landscape was propelled to the rank of sites listed as World Heritage by UNESCO.

Limestone is omnipresent and provides an exceptional soil for the Saint-Emilion vines. Its geographical area of approximately 8,000 hectares corresponds to two wine appellations Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, grouping together nearly 800 wine estates.

Lose yourself in the vineyards. Stop to visit the estates and taste the Saint Emilion nectar.
